1.) Shorter is better for toddler board games
Toddlers have a lot of amazing traits, their long attention spans aren’t on the list! When we’re looking at toddler board games, the first thing that we consider is how long the game takes to play. Five to ten minutes is ideal, fifteen minutes is the max we consider. Toddler board games always start fun, but finishing fun is how to keep them coming back for more! We found that if games dragged on our toddlers tended to lose interest, by sticking to shorter games, your toddler will finish fun and be begging for more.
2.) Look for new concepts
One thing to know about playing toddler board games as an adult, the gameplay is a little dull. That being said, we always loved playing new board games with our toddlers. It was uplifting to watch them figure out new concepts with each game! With toddlers, subject matter doesn’t matter. To them, everything is new and they find joy in experiencing it all! When picking toddler board games, it’s all about introducing new concepts. Look for games that introduce a die, a spinner, stacking, matching, and anything else new you can find to share with them.
3.) Keep to simple board games
Resist the urge to move to more advanced games too soon! As kids get older they will love a game that challenges but with toddlers its all about having fun and fostering a love of board games. Our youngest was loving toddler board games, so my natural instinct was to up the ante and try out some preschool board games. Big mistake! He wasn’t ready for the decision making required, and it squashed his interest in trying new games. Your toddlers will let you know when they’re ready to move onto preschool games by either asking for a new challenge, or because they stop asking to play their favorite toddler board games as often.
An aside on manufacturer age recommendations
As kids get older, manufacturer age recommendations become less and less reliable. Our preschoolers could play some games that were recommended for 6+, while there are some games recommended for 4+ that still aren’t a great fit for our 6 year old. However, with toddlers, manufacturer age recommendations are very good!
