Release Your Imagination, Tell Me a Story Cards Review
One of our favorite types of board games to play with preschool and kindergarten aged kids are open-ended, story telling board games. It’s always entertaining to hear what a young mind can come up with! One of our favorite preschool story telling games is eeboo’s Create and Tell Me a Story Cards. Overview
Eeboo’s Create and Tell Me a Story Cards are all about creativity and fun. Playing the game, everyone is working together to create a unique story based on the cards. There are a bunch of different versions (links to our favorites below), so you can choose the one that fits your childs interests! The size of this game all makes it a perfect stocking stuffer board game!

How to Play
Create and Tell Me a Story Cards are super easy to learn and play. Shuffle the cards, and turn them over one by one. As a card is turned over, players take turns adding to the story. There’s no winner and loser, it’s all about coming up with the best story together!
Gameplay
One of the neat things about Create and Tell Me a Story Cards is how flexible they are. When your kids are feeling creative and enjoying themselves they can go on for paragraphs about each card and create their own spoken novel. If, on the other hand, they are just looking for some quick fun they can stick to just a sentence and move onto the next card. They can do all this on their own without any intervention from you! I also love the cooperative style of this game, if you’re looking for more cooperative board games, check out the best cooperative board games for kids.
Because the story is based on the order of the cards, and more importantly the kids’ imagination, this game has incredible replayability! It’s so much fun to see the stories kids will create (in the games that don’t divert into potty humor!).
Learning Opportunities
Create and Tell Me a Story Cards are loaded with learning opportunities! Preschool board games are often focused on hard skills like numbers, counting, or letters. Create and Tell Me a Story Cards are focused on a completely different skill set. As your preschooler plays they will work on listening, communication (verbal and non verbal), vocabulary, creativity, and cooperation. Another thing we love is that the game doesn’t have a winner and loser. It’s so easy to get focused on winning and losing in most kid’s activities, especially board games. It’s nice to play something that is all about showing your kids the importance of letting their creative voice be heard.
What We Love
There’s a lot to love with Create and Tell Me a Story Cards. Board games can teach kids so much, but following rules, taking turns, and adding up the score doesn’t scream creativity. Create and Tell Me a Story Cards are completely different. Instead of following rules, you get the creative juices flowing and work together to make stories!
This game works with only one player as well. For those days when you’re busy and don’t have time to sit down and play a game with the kids, Create and Tell Me a Story cards are perfect to hand to the kids and let them create their own story!
What We’d Change
This is the first game I’ve reviewed that I can’t think of anything I would change! We love the creative gameplay that let’s you get away from the win/lose focus of most games. Packaging is something I usually think games could have done better with, but eeboo did great with this. The box and cards do a great job holding up to preschool gamers.
Final Thoughts
We have had a lot of games that are super popular in our house for a month or two, but then fade never to be seen again. While Create and Tell Me a Story Cards have never been one ours kids want to play over and over, we’ve had the game for 3 years, and it gets brought out every couple weeks for some creative fun. Our 3 year old has been enjoying learning it lately and our 6 year old still loves it, and loves playing with her. Another aspect to love is how portable this game is. It’s a perfect game to take on road trips, or throw in a purse, and pull it out to fill some down time (check out our other favorite travel board games).
Overall we give Create and Tell Me a Story Cards 4.5 out of 5 stars!
