Plan Your Date Night Board Games
With kids, date nights become a challenge. Everyone knows how important it is to keep making one on one time with your significant other a priority, but how do you do it? With the challenges of finding a sitter you trust, paying the sitter, AND fitting a date night into a schedule that likely has your evenings full of kids activities, date nights can feel more like a pipe dream then a regular occurrence. When my wife and I first had kids, we would get out on the occasional date night, but we could never manage to make it a regular thing. We knew we wanted make time together a priority, beyond the ‘once every month or two’ date night out, but hadn’t figured out how to accomplish it. We started to look at what we could do that would allow us to connect without the challenges of orchestrating a whole evening away from the kids. While the ‘Date Night In’ isn’t a new idea, it took us awhile to figure out how to make it work for us.
Our Perfect ‘Date Night In’
When we first started experimenting with date nights at home, let’s just say it was a bit of a flop. We started trying to do late night take out and a movie, but after a week of working, parenting, and who knows what else, that usually ended up as one (or both) of us sleeping through the movie. Great for catching up on our sleep, but it didn’t do much for our relationship. We played around with other stay-at-home date night ideas, but nothing felt quite right, until we tried a date night playing board games for couples.
Why Board Games for Couples Worked
Playing board games on our date nights at home was a revelation. With other things we tried, we were spending time together, but not really getting the chance to ‘check in’ with each other (it’s difficult to have a meaningful conversation during a movie for instance). One of the great things about board games is how social they are. It’s easy to carry on a conversation while you play. This is perfect for date night! Playing a leisurely board game gave us the opportunity to set aside the distractions and enjoy each other’s company.
Picking Your Date Night Board Games
One challenge we did face when we started out was finding the right board games. Most of our games at the time were geared at bigger groups for game nights with friends or family, and while some games played great with only two players, we had to dig a little to find games that worked well. There are some games designed specifically for two players that we started out with and branching out from there we’ve found lots of good options.
